Vatican Plan to Oversee Conversion of Anglicans - NYTimes.com. . . . . . In an extraordinary bid to lure traditionalist Anglicans en masse, the Vatican on Tuesday announced it would make it easier for Anglicans uncomfortable with their church’s acceptance of female priests and openly gay bishops to join the Roman Catholic Church while retaining many of their traditions.  How arrogant!

The ramifications of this 'union' of Anglican and Roman Catholic bodies is better left to the theologians and the individuals who are bound up in the process. I dare say that it will be an interesting situation were a gay priest, bishop or archbishop to apply for conversion, with or without a family as a foil, or as mentioned in the article a female priest. Stay tuned. Only time will tell.

The House is poised to take a vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) soon. While the real fight is going to be in the Senate, it is worthwhile to pause for a moment and take note of where we are in the House. Crunch time is coming, and it won’t work to call the day before the vote.



There are, according to my calculations, 212 likely yes votes in the House. That is 5 shy of the 217 needed to win a majority of votes. (Normally it’s 218, but there are two vacant seats, California’s District 10 and Florida’s District 19, and I don’t believe these vacancies will be filled prior to the ENDA vote in the House. Feel free to correct me if you have better info.)



Two weeks ago, there was a vote to strip hate crimes from the Defense Authorization Act in the House. It lost, but I and many others took the opportunity to note which Representatives showed their true colors. For those legislators who voted to strip us out, and were previously unconfirmed on ENDA, I moved to the “probable no” column. We need to focus our limited time and energy (though I hope some will step forward on ENDA). That leaves 36 U.S. Representatives who are unconfirmed on ENDA. Their emails (and phone numbers) are after the jump. Please contact those near you and ask for their support on ENDA.

The White House chief of staff may have to delegate much of the Afghanistan account and any plans for a stealth stimulus, spending most of his time on health-care deliberations. ... For all the focus on the public option, ultimately the issue of affordability and how to pay for the overhaul will be more important. ... Veteran observers have no doubt there will be several doomsday moments and dismiss the notion that everything will be approved and reconciled by Thanksgiving, the target deadline. The odds are a measure will pass -- assuming Snowe stays on board -- with Christmas lights and music in the background when Obama signs it.'

-- SCOOP -- WashPost 'Capitol Briefing,' 'CBO Estimates House Health Bill at $905B or Less,' by Lori Montgomery: 'Congressional budget analysts have given House leaders cost estimates for two competing versions of their plan to overhaul the health-care system, concluding that one comes within striking distance of the $900 billion limit set by President Obama and the other falls below it. House leaders have been working to lower the cost of the $1.2 trillion health-care package they offered in July. The report from the Congressional Budget Office, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post, puts the cost of one plan at $859 billion over the next decade and the other at $905 billion. The cheaper version would rely heavily on a more dramatic expansion of Medicaid, the government health plan for the poor that is funded partly by the states -- meaning already-strapped governors would have to pick up more of the cost of reform.'

--THE PUBLIC OPTION LIVES, Patrick O'Connor and Carrie Budoff Brown report on p. 1: 'The forces in favor of a public health insurance option roared back Thursday on Capitol Hill after weeks when their cause looked bleak. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) looked closer than ever to including a robust U.S. government-run insurance program in the House bill - saying recent attempts by the health insurance industry to undercut reform prove insurers can't be trusted. And in the Senate, a weekly policy lunch turned into a heated debate when liberals went after the Senate Finance Committee bill and made clear they won't roll over for legislation that doesn't include a public option. Reflecting deep divides within the caucus, the Senate luncheon turned tense, with voices elevated and senators venting. 'In today's lunch, it even involved a little performance theater,' Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) said, describing it as an 'emotional catharsis.'
